I studied abroad with American InterContinental University during the winter quarter of 2003. During the three months that I was abroad, I met so many wonderful people. I had great roommates and classmates. I was also very impressed with the number of students that attended from other American universities.
The first day I arrived in London, I was both nervous and excited. I was not used to the city life and had no idea where I would be living nor did I know how to find the school. But after I checked into my apartment, I knew I was going to have a great time. I met my roommates immediately when I got there, and realized that they were all in the same situation as me: not knowing anyone. A great friendship sparked and we signed up for many of the AIU planned activities in order to get to know other students.
The activities were quite enjoyable. I signed up for many plays including Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera, Stomp, and The Lion King. It was a luxury to go to classes during the day and go to the theater at night. Another AIU activity that I enjoyed was the soccer match between Tottenham and New Castle. The game was incredible. I grew up playing soccer and had heard about the games in Europe, but finally having the chance to experience a British match was beyond any sporting event I had ever experienced in the States. The fans were very supportive of their teams and invented chants to just about any song you could think of. Some fanatics sitting near us quickly spotted that we did not know the fight songs and taught them to us. The seats that we had at the game were prime seating directly behind the goal. The game was great, and I felt like I had experiences a true part of British culture.
The opportunities to travel were so grand in London. AIU understood that, as study abroad students, we wanted to travel and see other countries during our stay. During the three months that I was in London, I traveled to seven different countries throughout Europe. My friends and I traveled together and managed to do it very economically. We would talk to other students about their weekend trips and would gain excellent knowledge about where to stay and visit.
I had an excellent study abroad experience. I was able to accomplish everything that I wanted to see while I was there plus more. The friendships I established are still strong and we still talk to each other on a daily basis. My time in London is an experience that will remain foremost in my memory – an experience that I am eager to repeat!
