Out of the Classroom:

Prof. Griesinger collects rare books about design, architecture and art.

Professor Axel Griesinger loves hearing from former students. Sometimes when they come back and visit campus, he asks them to lecture to one of his classes. Other times, he doesn't put them on the spot, but rather just meets them for lunch.

"I get so much satisfaction from seeing a student develop through their studies; not just to graduate, but to be successful beyond graduation in their field. I am fascinated by the evolution of a student: to see them growing throughout their studies and then in practice."

Several months ago, a former student who had relocated to America after graduating was back in London visiting. Naturally she looked up Prof. Griesinger. This student had initially enrolled at AIU London when her husband's job had the family transferred to the city. She was a mother of several grown-up children and decided to use her time in London to set herself up for a new career in interior design. Now in San Francisco, the woman had started her own interior design business. It was flourishing, and she told Prof. Griesinger all about it when she took him out to lunch with her husband and one of her children. "Those are the stories I love to hear."

Still a practicing architect/interior designer himself, Prof. Griesinger knows how difficult making it in the design business can be, and that makes him even prouder of his students. He says the majority of his students do end up with successful careers in design after graduation. And why shouldn't they when they have all of the real-world experience he shares in the classroom as well as department-organized, industry-associated extracurricular activities such as a student chapter of BIDA (British Interior Design Academy), workshops, site visits, trade shows, and exhibitions to draw from? "We like nothing more than to see our students succeed."
