Meet Dean Gill Stark: Helping to Fashion a Quality Fashion Education

Degrees:

  • M.A., Design Management, De Montfort University
  • B.A. (Hons), Art and Design (Fashion and Art History) University of Leeds, 1986

In the Classroom:

In addition to serving as Dean of the Fashion Programs, Prof. Stark has recently taught Fashion Show Production I and II.

Out of the Classroom:

Before getting into teaching and administration, Dean Stark designed lingerie and nightwear for her own label as well as for other companies.

Gill Stark has done a lot during her career in fashion—everything from fashion design to fashion marketing. But it is her work at AIU London that makes her most proud. "I've been fortunate to be involved as the Fashion Department has developed. Since I've been at AIU London, we've developed new programs as well as built up and enhanced the overall quality of the programs." Dean Stark has been in AIU London's Fashion Department in various capacities for eight years. "That's longer than I've ever stayed anywhere."

What I enjoy about teaching is seeing students grow. Now I can do it through the individual classes I teach as well as in my capacity as dean. As dean, I'm watching students mature over their entire university education rather than during a single course. - Dean Gill Stark
Dean Stark says she has stayed with AIU London for as long as she has because of the students and the challenge. "Since my job within the department has changed over the years, everything continues to be interesting, and new challenges continually arise."

Even though Stark has been Dean now for several years, she makes sure she still has the opportunity to teach. "It's lovely to teach because it helps me to stay in touch with both the student experience and the lecturing experience. What I enjoy about teaching is seeing students grow. Now I can do it through the individual classes I teach as well as in my capacity as dean. As dean, I'm watching students mature over their entire university education rather than during a single course."

While Dean Stark is tremendously proud of what she has helped AIU London's Fashion Department to become, she is committed to ensuring that the programs include preparation for more than just careers in fashion. "A good degree isn't just about fashion and academic content, but also about the personal development of our students, and about them developing flexible, transferable skills that can be applied to a whole range of different situations."

Dean Stark believes AIU London's location and international student body help to enhance the educational opportunities as well. "One of the greatest advantages of learning at AIU is being in London. For fashion students, we're in the heart of London's fashion industry and we offer fantastic opportunities to make contacts with industry professionals and gain experience in the industry. The international student body, study abroad students from a wide range of U.S. universities, live projects with industry, frequent fashion shows, guest speakers and opportunities to gain work experience in industry, make the department a lively and stimulating environment."
